Sugar and Spice Term Two Community Project – Hermanus Rainbow Trust

This Term Sugar and Spice nanny training (Kirsten and Caithe) and Carolyn of Safe Kids First Aid Training, spent a weekend in Hermanus teaching 16 men and women from the Hermanus Rainbow Trust First Aid, Safety, Hygiene, Nutrition and simple, creative games to play with children.

We did not charge them for the course, but rather ran it as our quarterly Investment in the greater community project for term two 2010. (In term one be bought birth certificates for children who otherwise would never have had one)

The Hermanus Rainbow Trust aims to paint a rainbow of hope and opportunity for poor and marginalised communities, and operates within the Overstrand region of the Western Cape province in South Africa. The Trust provides essential health, social and education services in response to the dire needs of poor and marginalised communities within the region. They are officially registered as a trust and as a nonprofit organisation (NPO). The Trust is affiliated to the Hospice and Palliative Care Association of South Africa (HPCA).

The delegates ranged from home visitors who go around their community checking in on children and their mothers, teaching and giving them support. Community aftercare staff who run the community childcare facilities for kiddies to go to instead of hang around the streets after school. School inspectors who visit the schools and check that the standards are maintained and children are well cared for in the schools. Community cooks who prepare meals for those children that do not always have access to proper food.

It was an incredibly humbling experience to meet and work with this amazing people and to realise that through the programme we ran for them we have been able to directly impact the lives of hundreds of children in the Overberg region and to know that as I type some of them are already making mirror pictures, playing with play dough or learning how to do a puzzle!
